One of the most common complaints of amateur and high handicap golf players is when their golf ball curves too far away from the intended target, otherwise known as a slice.

A slice shot is when the ball loses energy while being propelled forward and ends up curving to the right or left. However, by choosing a golf ball that has been specifically designed to help reduce any side-spin and curvature, you’ll be able to enjoy a more successful round of golf out on the greens, as well as lower scores!

In this article, we have spent some time selecting the best golf balls that contain all of the important components needed to reduce the chances of a slice occurring (including compression, layers, and material). Plus, in order to help you make the most informed decision, we’ve also created a handy buyer’s guide.

Our take

When it comes to ensuring all-round premium quality and performance out on the greens, the Titleist Pro V1 Golf Balls are the number one go-to for golfers around the world.

An ideal choice for those who suffer from a slice, these golf balls have been carefully manufactured to offer an efficient design that features a 17% thinner cover than previous models. For this reason, the cast thermoset urethane elastomer cover system is able to allow for a low and long spin and a fantastic trajectory with fewer chances of curvature.

What’s more, its thin urethane elastomer cover has been paired with a fast core that has been carefully formulated to act as an engine, powering these balls with more speed and precision, all the while ensuring a lower spin game.

Stand-out features include

  • It has a large casing layer to improve speed without compromising on the spin
  • It has fantastic distance and a consistent flight with a penetrating trajectory to reduce the chance of the ball slicing left or right
  • It has a very soft feel for better control
  • The thin cover is able to prevent slices while improving distance

Our take

If you’re a slicer who is also looking to improve their distance, we think that the Callaway Warbird Golf Balls are an excellent choice for you to consider.

No matter your level of expertise or your swing speed capability, the Callaway Bird Golf Balls are made with an extra-large energy core that is highly compressible in order to help provide more distance and to enhance your natural ability.

To prevent the chance of a slice occurring, these golf balls have been made with Callaway’s patented HEX Aerodynamics Technology which is able to reduce the drag and impart a higher launch to increase speed, distance, and to prevent curvature to the left or right.

As well as this, its high-quality ionomer cover combines with the powerful core to create a satisfying feel, more control, and to encourage more distance.

Stand-out features include

  • They have a super soft feel which allows for more control and a more satisfying feel
  • The extra-large energy core is able to provide distance and speed without increasing the spin
  • It has been made with Callaway’s superb HEX Aerodynamics which work to allow for a higher launch and reduced drag, as well as a more precise trajectory to lower the chance of a slice being made – even on mis-hits!

Our take

If you’re a female golfer and are looking to purchase a set of golf balls that will be able to prevent a slice while improving the rest of your game, the Bridgestone e6 Lady Golf Balls are worth considering!

Not only have they been carefully engineered to provide consistency and maximum distance on all shots, but these golf balls also feature a two-piece (or two-layer) construction that is able to ensure more control and less chance of a slice occurring.

Additionally, the Bridgestone e6 Lady Golf Balls have a lower compression core to ensure improvements in both speed and distance, which will come in handy if you find your swing speed is lacking. They are also soft which will allow for a more satisfying feel, all the while guaranteeing more control and better trajectory to resist the force of being pulled to the left or right while in transit.

Stand-out features include

  • The improved aerodynamics are ideal for delivering extra distance and speed, making them suited to lady golfers who struggle with a lower swing speed
  • They are very soft to ensure a more enjoyable ‘feel’ and all-round better control
  • Low compression core combines with improved engineering to allow for more consistent shots that travel in the intended direction if power is lacking

Our take

If you’re looking for golf balls that will be able to cut out the frustration and do the work for you, look no further than the Polara Ultimate Straight Self-Correcting Golf Balls.

Specifically created to instill confidence into the player, the Ultimate Straight Self-Correcting Golf Balls are made with built-in self-correcting technology that is able to prevent the chance of a slice occurring by up to 75%.

How? The patented dimple pattern across the cover of these balls is the secret. These golf balls have shallower dimples around the center and deeper dimples on each pole. Therefore, when these golf balls are traveling through the air, they offer a much lower lift and drag than other types of golf balls which results in a reduction of the force that can cause the balls to curve to the left or right.

As well as this, the unique dimple pattern is also able to allow for moment of inertia asymmetry which essentially means that thanks to the weight distribution of the ball being carefully modified by Polara, these golf balls are able to guarantee a ‘preferred’ spin axis going through the poles of the balls to rescue hooks and slices. This is great for beginners and recreational players because it means that even in the event of a mis-hit, the golf ball will still resist side spin.

Stand-out features include

  • Arrow design that helps you to line up the ball to hit the intended target
  • Made with self-correcting technology that can prevent a slice or hook by up to 75%, as well as knocking around 45 minutes off a round
  • Less likely to get lost thanks to their ability to travel across the intended trajectory while resisting side-spin

For Increased Speed

Mizuno RB Tour Golf Balls

Our take

A bestseller, the Mizuno RB Tour X Golf Balls are great for reducing slices in players of all levels, as well as being able to reduce the chances of a slice occurring in windy weather conditions.

This anti-slice golf ball is a four-layer construction that features a dual-core with graduated firmness (made of butadiene rubber) that is able to release very high energy upon impact. To lower the chance of a slice, the high energy ionomer casing is able to provide additional energy which ensures more precise trajectories and straighter shots, time and time again.

Its performance is not compromised in the strongest of winds thanks to its high energy core which guarantees unparalleled power, while the four-piece design also allows for a great spin (that won’t slice) in approach shots.

As well as this, the cover itself is made of durable urethane which is very soft and responsive for better control across the green, while its c-360 dimple design helps to reduce the drag and improve speed for a better golfing performance all-round.

Stand-out features include

  • It has a C-dimple design for less drag and more speed
  • An ultra-soft urethane cover for more control
  • Four-piece (layer) construction to generate maximum energy
  • A dual-core design with graduated firmness for low spin and increased distance

Buyers Guide

Why does a slice occur and how do I fix it?

It’s frustrating and can ruin your golf score dramatically – so why exactly does it happen? We wish there was a simple and straightforward answer! The truth is, there are lots of different reasons why a slice occurs, and some of those come down to the golf ball that you’re using. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a golf ball that will help to reduce a slice:

How many layers the golf ball has:

Golf balls are made up of many different layers and these layers go some way in determining your performance while out on the greens. So, with that being said, one layer golf balls are the most affordable option and are mainly used for practice or while on driving ranges rather than for professional golf. They are made of one sheet of ionomer and then strategically patterned with dimples. It is worth noting that though they are the cheapest option, they usually compromise on performance and are unable to cover a huge distance.

Two-layer golf balls are the next step up and are a popular choice amongst beginner-intermediate players because they are able to provide excellent resilience and also cover an impressive distance. These are made of a resin that is coated with ionomer in order to create a solid core that is able to maximize the distance it is able to cover.

Additionally, the last most common type of golf ball is what is known as a ‘multi-layered’ gold ball. This is a golf ball that contains up to five layers and is mainly designed for professional players and for golfers looking to participate in golf. Besides offering more durability and control than other types of golf balls, they are also able to provide a lower spin thanks to them being made with a thin cover.

So, which is the best for helping to prevent a slice? Though golf balls with three layers offer excellent control, they tend to generate more spin, so we don’t recommend this type of golf ball for slicers. Golf balls that contain four or five layers are optimized to help ensure excellent performance across the board, so if you’re an experienced golfer who struggles with a slice, you may benefit from these types. However, the best golf balls in preventing slices are considered to be two-piece golf balls and are the type that we recommend for you!

Additionally, it is worth being aware that golf balls with an ionomer cover are also able to help reduce slicing thanks to the ball being harder than those made of other materials which are softer.

The spin rate

Many golf balls are described as having either a low, mid, or high spin and each group is suited to players of different levels and capabilities. Keep reading to learn more about which one is better suited to your game and to reducing a slice from occurring:

Low Spin Golf Balls

A popular choice amongst beginner to intermediate players, low spin golf balls can help to stop players from imparting excessive spin on their shots which can result in less distance or the balls stopping immediately as soon as they hit the ground. They are able to travel through the air straighter and roll further when they land. However, too low of a spin can lead to the ball quickly curving off-center as soon as you hit it.

Mid-Spin Golf Balls

Just like the name suggests, mid spin golf balls are the middle category and are therefore suited to a variety of different players. They’re known as the happy medium between low and high spin golf balls and are focused on increased distance, speed and feel. Due to this, they’re also a good option for helping to prevent a slice because they are designed to improve consistency, which means these balls tend to have a great trajectory that resists side-spin.

High-Spin Golf Balls

The last type of group are the high spin golf balls. These types of balls suited to experienced players as they are created to offer the maximum amount of spin while traveling through the air to allow for a longer distance to be achieved. Though high spin golf balls provide more control and better distance, they are prone to causing slicing when beginners, recreational and novice players use them.

The compression of the golf balls:

The compression that a golf ball has also impacts the chance of a slice occurring and is an indicator of how tightly tied the core threads are. The compression of a golf ball is what allows the ball to handle the force of the club without breaking.

Low compression golf balls are suited to players with a driver swing that falls below 85 miles per hour and is therefore suited to beginners, seniors and women players. Mid compression offer control and distance and are suited to swing speeds that feel between 85 to 105 mph. These types of golf balls are suited to the majority of players. On the other hand, high compression balls are designed for players with a swing speed above 105mph and are designed to balance out the high energy impact of the golf club with control and precision.

When it comes to preventing a slice, you might benefit the most from higher compression golf balls as they are harder and able to better resist the force of any curvature.

Golf Ball for Slice FAQs

A slice and a hook both refer to shots that curve away from the intended target – the only difference is whether the ball curves to the left or to the right! If the ball curves away from you after you hit it, this is known as a slice. On the other hand, if the ball curves around the circle then this is what is known as a hook. Additionally, a ‘fade’ refers to a little slice, while a ‘draw’ refers to a little hook.

A slice is when a shot that starts at the left of your intended target curves while in the air and lands directly to the right of your target. This is most commonly caused by side-spin which will usually occur when the clubface is incorrectly positioned while impacting the ball.

Generally speaking, irons tend to have more loft which allows for more backspin on all of your shots, as well as a higher launch angle. For this reason, it means that even if you mis-hit or have a poor grip, any occurrence of side-spin will have a lower chance of actually causing the ball to slice to the right or hook to the left.
